Comic Book Writing

June 4, 2009

Tonight, for the first time in years, I started writing a comic book script.  Really enjoyed it, too.  Comic book scripting is a unique type of writing, one that’s always had a special place in my heart.  I stepped away from it for a while, preferring to focus my energies on writing prose novels…but I’m happy to have an excuse to dig in again.  What I’m working on is just a short piece, a sample of a comic book series I’m proposing, but it’s still a major kick.  For one thing, it’s giving me a chance to exercise comic-specific skills I haven’t used in quite a while.  Blowing the dust off is always a good thing.  But this script is also getting me jazzed because it’s straight-up creative writing, which is something I haven’t done much of since finishing my latest novel back in April.  Though the break in creative work was by necessity and design, and the marketing materials I’ve been generating during that break are critically important, I can feel my creative engine getting restless.  I can only go so long without revving it up and letting it run.  So this script couldn’t come at a better time.  Next up, when I’ve wrapped the comic script, I hope to get rolling on a short story or three…maybe even some poems.  And of course I’ve got the next novel peeking over the horizon, reminding me that I need to write it.  That’s one thing about being a fiction writer:  plenty of interesting projects rolling through the pipeline at any given time.  See you soon!
