Head Work

August 9, 2009

Sometimes, even when my butt isn’t in the writing chair and my fingers aren’t hitting keys on the computer keyboard, I’m still making progress as a writer.  Putting aside all the non-writing activities that contribute to general health and well-being or broaden knowledge of storytelling, I sometimes have fertile non-writing days thanks to extensive thinking about projects in progress.  I’ll call it “head work.”  As I go about doing other non-writing things, I’ll keep my latest developing story or novel in the back of my mind, and details will accumulate.  Characters and situations will flesh out, laying a richer groundwork for when I finally manage to find the time for actual butt-in-the-chair writing.  This weekend, though I found zero time for writing, I did do a good bit of “head work,” and I’m confident it will enhance the story I now have in the pipeline.  In fact, I can’t wait to write the sucker!  So hopefully, I’ll find time this week and manage to move forward with this exciting project.  See you soon!
