Rock ’em Sock ’em Weekend

August 15, 2009

So what’s my review of District 9?  Action-packed, thought-provoking, great special effects, and very much worth seeing!  I just saw it today and really enjoyed it…but did it live up to the glowing reviews?  I’d have to say no, not a hundred percent.  I can’t point to anything in particular about the movie that I didn’t like.  But it just didn’t quite make it into the “loved it” category for me.  Still, it was highly original and exciting, and you should see it.  Not Oscar-caliber moviemaking, but a fine example of a rock ’em sock ’em action flick.  At least that’s my opinion.  And I’m part of the minority that didn’t love this year’s Star Trek.  Okay, maybe I’m the only person who saw it and didn’t love it, but still.  Your mileage may vary, right?

That action-jammed movie was just part of a very hectic but enjoyable weekend.  Friday, I went for a bike ride on the local rails-to-trails project, Ghost Town Trail.  Today, I drove to a theater midway between Johnstown (my hometown) and Pittsburgh to meet my brother, Scott (who lives in Pittsburgh) and see District 9.  Then home for errands and dinner with my wife.  Tonight, I kicked back for a night swim in the ol’ backyard pool, which had been heated to the mid-80s by a hot and sunny day.  Okay, so maybe my weekend hasn’t been that hectic, but it’s still been too busy for me to hit the writing and reading, which has been a disappointment.  Hopefully, I’ll find some time tomorrow for that, because I have a top-secret assignment I need to turn in at the beginning of the week, plus that ongoing story to finish.  And the week ahead looks like it will be extraordinarily busy, with limited writing opportunities.  So I’m hoping to strike a balance tomorrow between enjoying the wonderful summer weather and doing some much-needed fiction writing.  Of course, we’re going to church in the morning, then lunch with my 90-year-old father-in-law, and then he’s coming to visit for the afternoon, sooo…maybe I shouldn’t expect to get much done.  In fact, I should probably just bail on the writing tomorrow altogether and take the pressure off entirely.

But I probably won’t.  I have work to do.  And blogging!  See you soon!
