Failure Club

March 19, 2009

Everyone likes to talk about success, right?  Their own, especially.  When we finally hit it big in some way, we love to get out the news.  But talking about losing can be just as important.  For those of us who have yet to attain success, comparing notes with other losers can help get us through the day.  It helps us realize we aren’t alone, that other people are going through the same stage.  We’re not isolated, hopeless failures; we’re in the same boat with lots of other good people.  It’s even more helpful to talk with people who failed in the past and went on to succeed, to attain the same goals we want to reach.  It shows us it’s possible to win even after losing for a long time.  Just reading about these people can be inspiring, finding out that so-and-so’s novel was rejected 500 times before it went on to become a timeless classic.

Lately, on a list I visit, there’s been some talk about the rejections of fellow fiction writers.  I have to say, I’ve found it inspiring.  As long as I’ve been doing the writing thing in a serious way, I still sometimes get depressed about all the rejections I receive.  Sometimes, I feel like I’m the only one of my peer group who’s getting slammed like this.  But the truth is, many of them are indeed getting the same kind of treatment but don’t talk much about it.  Then, once in a while, the subject comes to the forefront, and I see I’m truly not alone.  Lots of writers are doing the same thing…working hard, day after day, writing and mailing, chasing down leads, and getting rejected again and again.  Or not even getting an answer.  I guess it’s the kind of information that could be discouraging; it makes the writing game seem less than fun.  But I find it the opposite.  I find it encouraging, because it means other writers, who I know are equally excellent, are struggling like I am.  It means we’re in this together, in a way…supporting each other spiritually, helping each other get through the dark times.  And hopefully, arrive at the really, really bright ones.

Now for the travel photo for today.  This one’s a shot of me at the Tower of Pisa in Italy in 1997.  Enjoy!  See you tomorrow!
