Office Restored!

March 7, 2009

The past week was a disruptive one in my writing office.  For one thing, my wireless keyboard died.  Then, my desk chair started falling apart.  These might not seem like big problems, but they really were.  Changes to my office space, especially to my writing tools, can be pretty distracting and cause dips in my productivity.  So I set out to put things back to normal as quickly as possible…and I’ve finally done so.  A replacement keyboard arrived today from Microsoft, a week sooner than the tech support guy had told me it would get here.  In addition, my neighbor, Brian Mahon, patched up my chair.  The plastic armrest/strut that broke in three spots and was barely hanging on by a fourth is now held together by a strip of metal.  Brian stopped by yesterday and attached the metal securely with six screws.  It’s holding up well so far.

With my keyboard and chair back to normal, I was able to have a productive day today.  Got my daily thousand words, did some editing, and dealt with some other issues.  My writing process felt “normal” again for the first time in days.  When you’re a writer, it’s the little things that keep you going…the little consistencies and comforts that enable you to tune out the world around you and create worlds in your head and words on the page.

Now for today’s travel photo!  This one comes from the pretty beach town of Lewes, Delaware, from 1999.  See you tomorrow!
