Actually, there was a famous professional farter, though his farts apparently did not stink. Joseph Pujol, known as Le Pétomane, was a famous French stage performer who made a career out of farting on command. Apparently, this flatulist performed for the crown heads of Europe and took his act to the renowned Moulin Rouge. At least, according to Wikipedia. I need to do some more research to see if this story holds up.
