Story, School, and Awesome Workshops

August 12, 2009

I’m happy to say I finally did some work on the current short story that’s been on my desk for the past two very busy weeks.  I wrote over 600 words tonight, which isn’t great, but is still better than writing zero words.  Now if I can just keep that going and finish the story this weekend.  Because I have a secret project I need to devote some time to, and it’s exceedingly wondrously cool.

Plus, I need to help my wife get ready to go back to school.  Wendy’s a teacher, and her summer vacation’s winding down.  Time to get back in the swing of things, and I want to do what I can to help her get off to a great start.  One big task that’s coming up in the next few days is setting up her new laptop computer.  I know that’ll take some time and effort, especially because I’m currently running our home wireless network through the antiquated desktop she’s been using.  Why do I have the feeling that job’s going to be a challenge?

As we roll into the end of summer, I’d just like to remind you to check out my latest story, “The Love Quest of Smidgen the Snack Cake,” in Space and Time Magazine #108.  Pick it up at your local Barnes and Noble or order it right here from the publisher.  I think you’re going to love it…my story and the magazine.  Give Smidgen a click, will you?

I also want to remind any prospective writers out there about the 2010 round of workshops in Lincoln City, Oregon, conducted by my mentors, Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch.  I can’t recommend these workshops highly enough.  They’ll help you break through the myths, build up your skills, and succeed in the challenging world of fiction writing.  Check out the latest info right here on Dean’s website.

See you soon!
