As a writer, one of the things I’ve learned the hard way is that projects can disappear into thin air quicker than you can say “Abracadabra!” No matter how definite a story or novel or essay sale might seem, it can go up in smoke like that. I’ve had it happen too many times, and it has always been a traumatic experience. Once, I sold a story to a magazine, only to have the magazine go belly up. (Probably the single most common cause of a no-sale sale.) Another time, I was in the process of writing a weekly serial for a major science fiction property, slated to appear on a major studio website (I kid you not), and the entire staff of the site was laid off. So much for that big break.
The point of all this is that I make it a point never to write or talk about an upcoming publication until the book or magazine has been printed or my work has gone live on the website. Or, in this case, until I get the official, super pinky swear final definite done-deal go-ahead from my editor. So here goes: I’ve written an essay titled “Sympathy for the Devils,” which will appear in In The Hunt, a new book about the TV series Supernatural.
In the Hunt, published by Benbella Books, is now available here for pre-order from Amazon. Barring some kind of crazy unforeseen disaster, it will ship after March 1, 2009. So I hope you’ll check it out and maybe even order a copy. Your support would be tremendously appreciated.
I just hope I haven’t jinxed it by mentioning it here. Seriously. That’s one thing about the publishing industry: anything can happen. See you tomorrow!
P.S. We sold our dining room suite today! That’s a load off my back. Now we just have to move it to the basement till the woman who bought it can arrange to pick it up. And then we have to help her move it. And we have to hope the check clears. But I’m sure everything will work out one way or another. Right? Right??
