Writer Land

February 6, 2009

I might have already mentioned that the company I work for moved into new offices this week.  They’re in a brand new building, which is quite impressive…but problematic when it comes to noise factors.  Actually, “problematic” is putting it mildly.  It’s like an echo chamber in our suite, especially since the company opted to leave out the drop ceiling that might have muffled some of the sound.  The metal ceiling has channels in it that just carry the noise from one end of the place to the other.  This has made it pretty tough to concentrate, especially because not everyone is considerate of the distracting effects their constant laughing and goofing around might have on the other employees around them.  I found a solution, however; I’ve moved to “Writer Land,” a spot at the far, far corner of the suite.  I’ve been allowed to set up my laptop on a little round table in that corner, right under a huge ventilation return vent.  There’s a constant loud whooshing from the vent as it draws in great draughts of air from the suite…but I love it!  The vent creates a white noise barrier that blocks out all sound outside a radius of about ten feet from me!  It has really made my life better, which is a great thing this month, as I’m working hard on a big proposal that most of our jobs depend on.  If I had to stay in my cubicle across from the giggling goof-offs, I’d have a much harder time completing the effort.  As it is, I already have a first draft almost done; this, after just starting to write the proposal this Tuesday!  So yay for Writer Land!  I’ve even put a sign on it, identifying it as such.  I just hope and pray the management doesn’t decide I can’t keep going there.  Sometimes it seems like good situations just don’t last.  But I’m keeping a good thought.  See you tomorrow!
